Walking into a shooting range for the first time can feel intimidating. Between safety rules, lane etiquette, choosing the right firearm, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news? Once you know what to expect, your first visit becomes less intimidating.
At Bill’s Gun Shop & Range we want you to have a positive first experience. When you feel confident and prepared, you’re more likely to stay safe, improve your skills and have fun at the range.
But where do you start? Prior to joining us at the range you can visit the website and review range rules and view the safety video which provides an overview of rules and guidelines that help visitors understand essential practices for a safe and enjoyable experience at our facilities. After reviewing the safety video, complete the online liability waiver. While these can also be done in-store during your first visit, completing before your visit makes the check-in process quicker.
1. Check-In Is Simple (And Our Staff Is There to Help)
When you arrive, you’ll check in at the front counter.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions—helping new shooters is part of the job.
2. You Don’t Need to Own a Firearm
Renting firearms at the range is one of the best ways to learn what you like before buying. We recommend trying a few different options to find a firearm that works best for you and your shooting style. For beginners, we would recommend renting a .22 caliber firearm that offers low recoil making it easier to control. You can move up to a compact and full size 9mm handgun.
What to expect:
It is also important to note that we require two shooters to rent a firearm, except if you have your permit to purchase or permit to carry. Besides, it’s more fun (and less intimidating) when you bring a friend or family member!
3. Safety Is the Top Priority
Your safety is very important to us. Make sure to follow range rules and policies for your safety and the safety of others.

Another factor when it comes to safety at the range is attire. Ejected brass is hot, so wearing high-necked, well-fitted clothing, and sturdy closed-toed shoes like sneakers or boots will protect your skin from possible burns.

4. Lane Time Is Flexible
Depending on the range you typically rent a lane for a set amount of time. At Bill’s you can take the time you need to train. Weekends at the range can get busy (and loud). If you are shooting for the first time aim to stop in during non-peak hours, this will allow you to take your time and minimize distractions and pressure.
